This summer the 2020 Olympic games will kick off in Tokyo, Japan and you’ll never guess how organizers are preparing. With condoms - a lot of them. Apparently Olympic athletes don’t just rest and prepare to compete at the Olympic village but the spot is popular for a party atmosphere with a lot of drinking and sexing between the athletes. This year, approximately 150,000 condoms will be given out to 11,000 athletes (that’s 13 ½ condoms per athlete) but this year, they’re asking athletes “not to use them” until they leave Tokyo. According to organizers, this is a step taken in order to curb the rates and spread of COVID-19. In addition to this update, athletes are also not allowed to drink while at the village, unless they’re in their rooms by themselves.

The distribution of condoms at the Olympic Games were introduced in 1988 to raise awareness for HIV and AIDS, and the number of condoms that are given away have skyrocketed ever since. In 1988, organizers gave away 8,500 condoms in Seoul compared to a whopping 450,000 at the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. The 2020 Olympic games which were originally scheduled to take place last summer will kick off with the opening ceremony this Friday July 23rd! Will you be watching?
