Women of NC: Pauli Murray and Her Work as a Civil Rights Activist and More!

March is Women's History Month! Every day we will be commemorating and sharing the stories of influential women from North Carolina.

Anna Pauline Murray, also known as Pauli, was an amazing woman who worked to fight against segregation. She became the only woman enrolled in Howard University Law in 1941, and earned her law degree. She criticized the leadership of civil rights organizations and how they were dominated by men and not inclusive of women. She worked with Betty Friedman and launched the National Organization of women to amplify the voices of black women during the Civil Rights Movement. In 1940, she refused to move to the back of the bus and was placed in jail for fighting back against segregation laws.

Her life is full of accomplishments and hard-fought battles for equality. In 1977m she became the first Black woman to be vested as an Episcopal priest.
