These North Carolina Cities Are Among The Best For An Active Lifestyle

At the start of each year, many people make the decision to exercise more and be more active. Some cities, however, are better suited for an active lifestyle than others.

A new study by WalletHub compiled a list of the country's 100 biggest cities to determine which are the best for people keeping up with an active lifestyle. Several cities in North Carolina made the cut.

Here are where North Carolina cities rank among the best for an active lifestyle.

  • Charlotte (41)
  • Greensboro (50)
  • Raleigh (52)
  • Durham (58)
  • Winston-Salem (81)

While Winston-Salem ranks lower on the list, including having among the fewest basketball hoops per capita, Greensboro sits in the exact middle of the list but comes in fourth for the lowest monthly fitness club fees.

The top 10 cities are listed below in order:

  • Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Portland, Oregon
  • San Diego, California
  • San Francisco, California
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Austin, Texas
  • Denver, Colorado
  • Los Angeles, California
  • Washington, DC

To determine the list, WalletHub compared 100 cities across the country using two factors: "budget and participation" and "sports and outdoors." These factors were then evaluated using 36 relevant metrics, such as average monthly fitness-club fees, Google search interest for "at home workouts," sporting goods stores per capita, bike score, playgrounds per capita, hiking trails per capita, and more.
