Author Shea Serrano, who literally wrote the book on Scrubs, is back on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends! He joins Zach Braff, Donald Faison, and producers Dan and Joelle to talk about the season three episode “My Brother, Where Art Thou” and how cleverly it handles character relationships. They also learn a little bit about OnlyFans and debate whether dog piles and wrestling are just masculine forms of cuddling before Kate calls in to ask Zach about how he directs his own acting. Plus, she gets some advice from Donald’s wife CaCee Cobb about getting a little time for herself away from her husband and kids after Kate admits to hanging out in her car in parking lots so she can listen to the podcast uninterrupted.
In “My Brother, Where Art Thou,” J.D.’s brother Dan comes back, and in a touching scene at the end of the episode, berates Dr. Cox for making J.D. too cynical and sarcastic. Shea says it’s a perfect example of Scrubs’ ability to deftly pivot from outrageously silly to incredibly profound – “He’s giving this touching speech, but only a few minutes ago he was in a traveling fart band!” – and points out that it brings up a big question for the audience. Dan is kind of a crappy older brother, stealing J.D.’s love interests and embarrassing him in front of his friends, but after he stands up for J.D. with Dr. Cox, we’re left to wonder if Dan hasn’t been doing more for J.D. behind the scenes than he realizes. It’s a great triumph of character development for J.D., Dan, and Dr. Cox, all in one fell swoop.
Donald reveals that he found out he had his own Dan at the network during this episode as well. The day they shot Turk’s monologue about his family, their NBC rep Sharon Liggins was on set to watch. She told Donald that she wanted him to really give it his all, because she had told the network that Turk needed more to say as an African-American character. “She stepped up for me,” Donald says. Zach never knew that story, replying, “That’s such a great story about who she is and what she was trying to do with the network.” They laugh about Sam Lloyd’s wig work, J.D.’s very-not-2020 outfit, and Baxter the dog, as well as breastfeeding, Michelle Branch leaving Zach on read, how acceptable it is for children to curse, and much more; hear the whole hilarious conversation on this episode of Fake Doctors, Real Friends.
