Mom Fires Babysitter After She Accidentally Gets Drunk

Finding the right person to watch your children for you is never easy, and there are some things you just won’t tolerate from a nanny or babysitter. Getting drunk while watching the kids is certainly one of them, but this mom fired her babysitter for doing that, and most people are actually on the babysitter’s side.

A mom recently shared on Reddit how she felt “betrayed” by the 16-year-old girl who watches her two kids, ages eight and four, everyday. The mom says that when the girl first started watching the children, she asked if there was anything they could keep in the house for her, and she simply asked for some seltzer water. The mom says she got it for her but after about a month she forgot.

That’s where the problem arises. The mom writes that a few days ago she bought some hard seltzers for her and her husband but “didn’t think anything of it.” Later that day the babysitter messaged the mom to tell her she wasn’t feeling well and would need to go home. The mom asked her to try and hold out until the end of the day, but then she called crying saying “something was wrong and she had to go home.” The mom notes, “she was drunk clearly, she drank the hard seltzer. I told her to leave and she walked home.”

The sitter then called her the next day apologizing. Seems the girl never drinks, because both of her parents are alcoholics, and had no idea that hard seltzer had alcohol in it. But the mom showed absolutely no empathy, noting, “I told her to find a real job and that it wasn't my fault she got drunk."

  • While the mom truly believes she didn’t do anything wrong, the Internet does not agree at all.
    • You're an ungodly [expletive]," one person commented. "Those seltzers are newish in the alcohol world and I wouldn't expect someone who hates alcohol to know that. How mature of her to let you know. How immature of you to do what you did."
    • “She’s 16 and accidentally drank what she believed to be seltzer water, which you offered to provide her with," another pointed out, noting that the girl did everything right by calling the mom right away, and then calling again to discuss what happened.
    • Others pointed out that the mom actually put the sitter in danger by making her walk home alone when she was drunk.
    • “This 16yo kid called you as soon as she realized there was a problem,” one person shared. “She's still a KID. But you, a grown adult, fully aware she was drunk and confused --knowingly put her at risk."
